MATTHEWS CEMETERY (Historic) BIGBYVILLE, MAURY COUNTY, TENNESSEE

We are looking south. This is the transition into the older part of the cemetery on
our right and the newer part on the left. Some of the dense green grassy areas are unmarked graves
caused by the soil being softer there after having been disturbed by the grave diggers. That disturbance
of the soil by grave diggers later allows the roots of grass to penetrate the softer ground and cause the
greener areas to form. This is especially true if the grave sinks in somewhat. Two such obvious areas are
the spots in our lower right area of the photo. Photo by Wayne Austin Dec 13, 2004.

We are continuing to photograph the rows as we progress thru the cemetery toward the back. The
trees get larger and more prevalent as we go back The large tree near the box tomb above has grown
up inside a grave and reduced what was at one time a box tomb to shambles. We are looking at some of the older Scott & Hanna memorials above. Photo by Wayne Austin Dec 13, 2004.
