MATTHEWS CEMETERY (Historic) BIGBYVILLE, MAURY COUNTY, TENNESSEE

We are looking south at row 10 thru 13 here. The many skips or unmarked graves make the task of
tracking the rows difficult. The large memorial to our right belongs to couple J. W. and S. M. Matthews.
Further out in the same row is the fallen stone for Luther Matthews. That iron rail encloses the
M. E. Scott family lots. Photo by Wayne Austin Dec 13, 2004.

We are looking back north across some of the rows. There were so many rows I lost track
of the count because they are hard to make out. All of the stones face to the east in keeping with
the Christian thought that Christ will come from the east upon his return to earth to raise the dead
and claim the saved. Also the deceased was placed in the grave with the feet toward the east. Now
I am not about to go digging around to prove that and I think most everyone realizes that is symbolic. because the person who fell to their death in the ocean has the same chance as all the rest. The tall stone to our left is the R. M Scott stone while the flat stone in front of us is the Hanna family stone. Photo by Wayne Austin Dec 13, 2004.
