steel stake holding it up. 8125/8126
There are five or six graves marked by fieldstones. The massive rock wall around this graveyard is well preserved and has served to keep the cattle out over the years. The cemetery is difficult to reach since there are two gates, normally kept padlocked, on the road from the highway. I was fortunate to find one of the farm workers who let me through the gates. [Fred Lee Hawkins, 1988.] The Rock wall is now fallen in some places and a large tree has fallen into the graveyard and knocked over stones that were not damaged before Mr. Fred Hawkins visited here in 1988 and even John Benderman's visit of 2005. The initial transcription of the Estes Cemetery was
mostly from Maury County Tennessee Cemeteries, by Fred Lee Hawkins, Jr., page 573,
Mr Fred visited there 8 Mar 1988. This cemetery is also found in the book They Passed This Way
published in about 1967 by Gordon & Lightfoot. Page A-91.
This cemetery was partially photographed by John R. Benderman in Nov 2005 and compiled
for addition here 9 Aug 2009 by Judy Benderman Forgos of Ohio (She and John Benderman are
relatives of some of those that are interred in this cemetery) from the photos and Mr. Fred
Lee Hawkin's survey. This compiler (C. Wayne Austin) visited this cemetery on 29
Sep 2009 and attempted to photograph all the stones. While walking the
mile to the cemetery I lost critical cleaning gear and had to settle for second
rate photography. This site was added here initially by C. Wayne Austin including mapping to locate
the cemetery for future reporting on its status 12 Aug 2009. Revised again
to include the photos of 29 Sep 2009 on 25 May 2010 by C. Wayne Austin.
