faith". Masonic Emblem. Military marker: "Corp Co A 40th Tenn Inf.
Confederate States Army". (Enlistment date: 1861/01/00, Tenn, Fort Pillow,
Corporal; Discharge date: 1862/10/12, Regimental Unit, 40th Tn Regiment Co. A.;
Pension Rec: Yes, Authority, Alabama Pension No. 16139, Limestone Co. Letter
from Adjutant General 1914/07/16, Engagements: From Adjutant General: "The
name Geo. W. Johnson has not been found on the rolls, on file in this office
(last one dated Dec. 31, 1861), of Company A, 40th Tennessee Infantry, C.S.A.
(the only 40th Tn. organization, C.S.A., of which the office has any record).
However, the Union prisoner of war records show that one G.W. Johnson (name also
borne as J.W. Johnston), corporal, Co. A, 40th Reg. Tn. (arm of service not
shown), C.S.A., Remarks: Was captured at Island No. 10, April 8, 1862, and that
he was confined at Camp Butler, Springfield, Illinois, and declared exchanged at
Aikens Landing, November 10, 1862. No later record of him has been found.";
