WILKES-CAMPGROUND
CEMETERY-MAURY COUNTY TENNESSEE-CULLEOKA
WILKES,Zurilda Amis was born 17 Nov 1830 in Culleoka, Tennessee, the 3rd child
of Thomas Amis and Hannah Gordon Kennedy. She was most likely named after
Hannah's younger sister, Zurilda, who was about 2 years old at the time of the
birth of Zurilda Amis. On 1 Jan 1857, she united in Holy Matrimony with Rev.
William Harris Wilkes. He was a widower having been married previously to
Zurilda's sister, Mary Kennedy Amis, who died in 1855, leaving W. H. with three
small children at home. W. H. and Zurilda had one child - a daughter for which
Zurilda named Mary Kennedy Wilkes, in honor of her sister. Zurilda Wilkes died
on 28 Feb 1860 from consumption and was laid to rest at Wilkes-Campground
Cemetery, near the final resting place of her sister, Mary. Inscription in part
reads: Zurelda wife of Wm H. Wilkes & daughter of Tho's & Hannah Amis
born Nov 17th 1830 died Febry 28th 1860. Revised information by Rick
