SANDFORD, Colonel James T., "Sacred To the memory of Col. James T. Sandford,
who departed this life december 13th 1830. age 60 years. he lived a firm and
consistent Christian and died in the hope of blessed immortality. In his
character were happily blended the Christian virtues of hospitality and
benevolence. in him the cause of education found a liberal friend for many
years. he was an elder in the Presbyterian church. he was also a trustee and one
of the principal founders of the manual labor academy. the memory of the just is
blessed." The Manual Labor Academy was the forerunner to the Jackson
College. which stood over on the hill 600 yards to the west of the
cemetery between what is today Brown Road and the cemetery where Mr. Sandford is
interred. He also donated 11.5 acres for the establishment of the Manual Labor Academy. Colonel
Sandford was serving as a justice of the peace for Maury County in 1809 and
served as Maury County Court Chairman for many years. He also served as a
Captain in the War of 1812.Photo & information by
