Obituary for Mary Sue Kennedy
Mary Sue Guthrie Kennedy, age 84, a resident of the Sandy Hook Community near Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Friday, January 1, at her residence.

Funeral services for Mrs. Kennedy will be conducted Sunday, January 3, at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Brother Les Hinkle officiating. Burial will follow in the Arlington Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.

Born on June 29, 1925 in Summertown, Tennessee Mrs. Kennedy was the daughter of the late Jessie Lee and Ruby Workman Guthrie.

Prior to her marriage, Miss Guthrie worked for Reynolds Aluminum in Kentucky. Miss Guthrie then traveled to San Bernardino, California, where she trained with the Army Air Forces Technical Training Command as an Aircraft Sheet metal Mechanic. In August 1945, she joined the United States Navy WAVES Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service. The day following her enlistment, the Japanese surrendered thus ending World War II. Miss Guthrie was honorably discharged August 30, 1945 with the rank of Apprentice Seaman. She was later employed by Southern Bell Telephone Company of Nashville, Tennessee.

She married Jeff Edward Mutt Kennedy December 21, 1946. Mr. Kennedy died January 20, 1999. Mrs. Kennedy was a member of the Church of Christ. She enjoyed piecing quilts, fishing, working in her vegetable garden and most of all, spending time with her family.

Survivors include three sons: Jeff David and wife Sharon Hooker Kennedy, of Winder, GA, Joel Lee and wife Cathey Lindsey Kennedy of Sandy Hook, Terry Guthrie and Tamara Marlin Kennedy of Murfreesboro; two sisters: Bertha Bell and Nell Garretson, both of Franklin, TN; five grandchildren: Mary Beth Lovett and husband Brian of Sandy Hook, Jeff Thomas Kennedy and wife Whitney of Ardmore, Al, Matthew Scott Kennedy and wife Sonya of Murfreesboro, Daniel Seth Kennedy and wife Laura of Woodstock, GA, and Adam Tyler Kennedy of Murfreesboro; five great-grandchildren: Paola and Amy Kennedy, Mary Catherine and Jason Lovett, and Colin Kennedy. Mrs. Kennedy also leaves behind her devoted companion and caregiver, Belle Isabell.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Kennedy was preceded in death by one grandson, John Lee Kennedy, one brother, Claud Guthrie, and one sister, Sara Crawford.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.
