[IN MEMORIAM Col. J. W. B. Thomas Sr. Another true and enthusiastic speciman (sic), one of the most untiring of the "Old Guard," and withal a gentleman of the finest qualities of the head and heart, has passed to the "shadow land," leaving a void in that circle that can never be filled. Col. J. W. B. Thomas departed this life at his home, four miles southwest of Columbia, on the night of the 26th of January, aged 75 years and 18 days. ...] Ref: Richard Wright e-mail Wright2Me@aol.com. According to Civil War Soldiers and Sailors J.W.B. Thomas was in the 9th Tenn Inf. Co. B. rank in Pvt. rank out Pvt. Film Number M231 roll 43 also "The Civil War in Maury Co. Tennessee" by Jill K. Garrett and Maurise Lightfoot; page 115 Chapter XI: James W.B. Thomas listed as private. The 9th (Gantt's) Tennessee Cavalry Battalion was organized Nov 28 1861 and mustered into Confederate service Dec. 23, 1861 and surrendered at Fort Donelson on Feb 16 1861. The prisoners were exchanged at Vicksburg in Sept. 1862, and the group was reorganized at Jackson, Miss. They were paroled at Charlotte, N.C., 3 May 1865.
