Co., Tenn., Died: 4 Nov 1922, Tenn. Married: (1) circa 1865 Florence Fleming (dau
of Judge William Stuart Fleming and Frances McClelland Stephenson) Note:

Enlisted at the organization of Capt. John B. Hamilton's Co. A, 2nd Battalion,
Tennessee Cavalry (later 1st Tennessee Cavalry) as Third Corporal; promoted to
2nd Lieut; joined Co. G, 9th Tennessee Regiment under his cousin, Lt. Col.
Albert Gallatin Cooper and promoted to 1st Lieut; on October 23, 1863 under
General G. J. Pillow, promoted to major and raised a regiment of Confederate
guerrillas; captured February 1864 in Lewis Co., Tennessee with ten of his men;
imprisoned at Fort Delaware; escaped; recaptured; was in the last exchange of
prisoners between the North and South. Promoted to Colonel. Maury County
Tennessee National Guards became known as "Cooper Rifles" on April 19,
1888 in his honor. Paroled at Jackson on May 21, 1865.
Duncan Brown Cooper the first son of Marian Witherspoon Brown, was named for his
mother's father, the renowned Presbyterian minister, the Rev. Duncan Brown. Of
all of the children of Matthew Delamere Cooper, "Dunc" Cooper was the
most colorful.
