Hal Beasley Cathey, 94, longtime farmer and resident of Cathey's Creek Road in the Hampshire Community, died Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at NHC Hillview.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Bro. Hueston Marshall officiating.
Burial will follow in Worley Cemetery.
The Maury County native was born on November 8, 1918, the son of the late Mumford Cathey and Willie Matt Sparkman Cathey.
He was a graduate of Hampshire School.
On March 6, 1942 he married Era Nell Goodman Cathey who preceded him in death March 11, 2003.
He was a lifelong farmer and managed the Blue Grass Tobacco Warehouse and later worked at the Big Dixie Tobacco Warehouse both in Mt. Pleasant. He was very active in the community. In the 1960's he was Troop Leader of Boy Scout Troop 166, President of the Hampshire School PTA and was a member of Hampshire Ruritan Club where he also served as President.
In the 1950's and 1960's he coached the Hampshire Team in the Country Independent Baseball League and was also known as one of the best umpires in the Independent League. He was one of the first members of The Hampshire Men's Club and the only President of Worley Cemetery Association. He was a County Committeeman for the ASCS for many years. Mr. Cathey was a member of Cathey's Creek Church of Christ and later Beech Hill Church of Christ.
Survivors include his sons Gilbert (Barbara) Cathey of Mt Pleasant, Frank (Gail) Cathey and Earl (Mary Jane) Cathey both of Hampshire; daughter Shirley (Randy) Boshers of Mt Pleasant; sister Tennie Chaffin of Columbia; grandchildren Allen (Tenille) Cathey of Texas, Dawn Cathey of Nashville, Angie Boshers (Mike) Osborne and Shane (Casey) Boshers both of Mt Pleasant; great-grandchildren Briana Boshers, Katie Boshers, Emma Boshers, Cody Hollis, Erin Hollis all of Mt Pleasant, as well as Chase Cathey of Houston TX; brother-in-law Birney Alphin of Franklin; sister-in-law Irene Roden of Hohenwald; and special caregiver Suzanne Jones.
He was preceded in death by sisters Sarah Alphin and Anna Cathey.
Active pallbearers will be Allen Cathey, Shane Boshers, Mike Osborne, Bobby Grimmett, Phillip Griffith, Mark Jones, Ronnie Johnson, Bill Johnson and Huey Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Blair Pogue, Dan Shannon, Joe Sam Savage, Harry Masterson, Ed Brown, Vernon Brooks, Joe Duncan, Dwight Savage, Curtis Riley, Dr. Robert Bain and members of Hampshire Men's Club
