James Treanor Granbery, Jr. died peacefully on May 14, 2012. He was born on January 1, 1925 to James Treanor Granbery, Sr. and Llewellyna Rebhun Granbery in Nashville, Tennessee. His younger years were spent at the family home on Brighton Road and then at Seven Springs Farm in Brentwood. He attended secondary school at Montgomery Bell Academy and at Woodberry Forest School in Virginia, graduating in 1943. Thereafter, he entered the United States Navy serving during World War II on Navy PT boats near Borneo in the Pacific Theater. He attended and graduated from Princeton University and then worked on the barge side of Ingram Oil & Refinery Company from late 1947 to 1957, living in New Orleans. In 1953, he married Lillian Anne Duke of Jackson, Mississippi, and in 1957 they returned to Nashville where he worked in general insurance, eventually creating Granbery and Associates General Insurance Agency until its merger with what is now The Crichton Group. He was an avid golfer and a member of Shoal Creek and BMCC, taking many trips with friends to both Shoal Creek and other golfing venues. He was a long-term member and supporter of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee. He also supported many civic, educational, charitable and religious organizations and was a communicant at St. Bartholomew's Church and the Church of the Resurrection. He was a major supporter of Woodberry Forest School in Virginia and donated all the funds for "Granbery House" at the school in memory of his parents. He is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Lillian Duke Granbery, brother-in-law, Frank M. Duke (Susan) of Jackson, Mississippi, nieces and nephews, Charles Granbery Cornelius (Melinda), Llewellyna Cornelius, Susan Cornelius West (Steve), William Langley Granbery, Jr. (Lois), Horace Hill Granbery (Cornelia), James Wentworth Granbery (Jamie), Elizabeth Granbery Dingess (David), Frank M. Duke, Jr. (Leigh), Barry Duke Hendricks, and 20 great-nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Llewellyna Granbery Cornelius and brother, William Langley Granbery.
Visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2012, at the Church of the Resurrection, 1216 Sneed Road, Franklin, Williamson County, Tennessee, with a Memorial Service to follow at 2:00 p.m. A private interment service will be held thereafter at St. John's Church at Ashwood near Columbia, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Church of the Resurrection, St. Bartholomew's Church, the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, Woodberry Forest School or the charity of your choice .
