Funeral services for Dr. Joseph Frank Wilkes, 53, former Maury County teacher and noted educator, will be held Sunday at 3:30 pm at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. J. Earl Gilbreath. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Dr. Wilkes, Maury native and professor of education at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, died Friday in Louisville hospital following an illness of several months.
Dr. Wilkes, son of the late Joseph and
Bertha Kinzer Wilkes, was a graduate of Columbia High School.
He received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Tennessee, his
masters degree from Peabody college, and his doctor of education degree from the
University of Illinois. He taught for some time in the Maury County school
system, and later was supervisor of elementary education in Giles County. He was
professor of education at Middle Tennessee State College at Murfreesboro for
seven years before going to Louisville in 1952.
He was member of the Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Verna Gilbreath Wilkes; a son, Frank Wilkes, Louisville, and a sister, Miss Rachel Wilkes, Centralia, ILL.
