Clarence H. Murphy, 80, a
resident of 308 Hay Long Ave., Mt. Pleasant, died late Wednesday afternoon at
Maury County Hospital after a one-week illness. The body is at Williams Mt.
Pleasant Funeral Home where funeral services will be conducted from the chapel
at a time to be announced later. Ralph Gilmore and Herschel Patton, ministers of
the North Main St. and Locust St. Churches of Christ, respectively, will
officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. He was a native of Maury
County, the son of the late Joe H. and Willie Haywood Murphy, and the husband of
Kate King Murphy to whom he was married in 1916. Mr. Murphy was in the freight
transfer business in Columbia, using mules and dray wagon in the beginning. He
moved to Mt. Pleasant in 1927 and founded the Mt. Pleasant Transfer Company. He
retired in 1954. Mr. Murphy was a member of the North Main Street Church of
Christ. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five daughters, Mrs. J. T. (Katheryn)
Edwards, Mrs. Lucius (Dorothy) Edwards, Mrs. Virgil (Carolyn) Douglas, Miss Sara
Ellen Murphy, all of Mt. Pleasant, and Mrs. L. E. (Anne) Gibson, Columbia; two
sisters, Mrs. Jason (Hattie Lee) Dugger and Mrs. Horace (Carrie Mai) Kinnard,
both of Columbia, one brother, David Murphy, Columbia; eight grandchildren, Mrs.
Steve Dennison, Louisville, Ky., Miss Sandra Gibson and Neal Gibson, Columbia,
Danny and Jerry Douglas, David and Hendley Edwards, all of Mt. Pleasant, and
Johnny Edwards, U.S. Navy, Vietnam; two great-grandchildren, Rene and John David
Edwards, Mt. Pleasant; and several nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers will
be Bill Brooks, Glen Kinnard, George Knox, Raymond Frye, Leroy Gibson, Ray
Massey, Herbert Amick, Clyde Angell, Richard Amick and James Douglas. Honorary
pallbearers will be William Colvert, O. A. Trice, Clarence Allen, Spencer
Stacey, Dr. J. O. Williams, Dr. Allyn Lay, Leroy Staggs, Hershel Pitts, Tom
Tellous, Bus Wilson, Shelton King Jr., Charles Loven, Morrow B. Henson, Claude
Brawner, Bruce Romesburg, Harry Edwards, Charlie Wood and the elders and deacons
of North Main Street Church of Christ.
