Capt. John Gordon a native of Virginia, was born on July 15,1763. As a younger
man he served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. A few years later he moved
West, first to Kentucky and then to the Nashboro area near which later was
called Nashville. He was a Capt. during the Nickajack Campaign in 1794. In 1796
he was appointed as the first postmaster of Nashville. He operated a ferry on
the Duck River, near the present Maury - Hickman Co. line as early as 1801. He
was an intimate friend of Andrew Jackson. His grave was first located near
Cottage Hill, his estate in Hickman co., but was later moved to Rose Hill
Cemetery.
