Carl Gilbreath Dies Unexpectedly of Heart Attack
Funeral services were to be held this afternoon for Carl C. Gilbreath, lifelong Maury county farmer and widely known business man, who died unexpectedly of a heart attack about 6:30 last night, soon after he had arrived at his home near Southport from his office here.
A native of Maury county, son of the later John A. and Rebecca Rea Gilbreath; Mr. Gilbreath was born 65 years ago, and attended schools in this county, being among the first students to attend the Columbia Military Academy in the first years of the 20th century.
He was engaged in farming from early life and was an extensive landowner. He was also president of the Columbia Rock Products Co., a firm engaging in rock quarrying and crushing and phosphate mining, a director of the Maury County Tobacco Warehouse Association, and vice-president and director of the Duck Rive Electric Membership Corporation. He was on the board of the Rose Hill Endowment Association also.
He was an elder of the Glenwood, Cumberland Presbyterian Church and active in all community affairs.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Lou Horn Gilbreath, and by the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. W. D. Patterson of Columbia, Mrs. Clifford Pullen of Atlanta, Mrs. Joe Frank Wilkes of Murfreesboro, J. T. Gilbreath of Hereford, Texas, the Rev R. R. Gilbreath of Plainview, Texas, J. F. Gilbreath of Jennings, LA; C. T. Gilbreath of Los Angeles, Calif.; The Rev. Earle Gilbreath of Atlanta, and Emmett Gilbreath of Columbia.
Funeral services were to be held at 4 pm today, at the parlors of Oakes &I Nichols, conducted by the Rev. H. R. Allen, pastor of the Glenwood C. P. Church.
Active pallbearers will be Wayne and Harry Pressnell, Carl Ashton, W. C. Fraser, AB Walters, John Robert Gilbreath, Joe Frank Wilkes and John Patterson.
