BATTS, Jane Hortense, 1909 - 1949. (Orbit, not date, probably Columbia Herald: " Mrs. Jane Hortense Batts, 40, wife of Thomas Norman Batts, Jr., died about 3 P.M. Monday at her home at 1022 Woodland Street after a long illness. Mrs. Batts, daughter of the late William Henry and Hollie Burton Pigg Fields, was born and reared in Columbia. She was a resident of Columbia all her life and for 20 years, a teacher in McDowell School. She was a member of the Methodist Church for 30 years. Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Wallace Journey, Columbia; one sister, Mrs. Grady Cothran, Amherst, Ohio; one brother, J.C. Fields, Columbia; one half sister, Mrs. Gertrude Robins, Birmingham; and one grandson Wallace Gray Journed, Columbia. Funeral service will be held at 5 p.m. today at the First Methodist Church and will be conducted by the Rev. W.M. Cook, assisted by Elder Leon C. Burns. Remains will be at the home until time for services..........Interment will be in the Rose Hill cemetery with Williams Funeral home in charge." )
