AKIN, James, 23 Dec 1818 - 17 Jan 1870. Mason. Block "L"

James was married 1st to Mary J Porter with whom he had Walter and Hugh, both served their country. His 2nd marriage was to Elizabeth B. Porter with whom he had an additional seven children. Some of whom lie around him here in Rose Hill Cemetery.
He was born and died in Maury County and during his stay he was a Mason, a Merchant, Mayor and Alderman.
The Herald carried a Tribute of Respect written by the Board of Mayor and Alderman in which some of this history was stated. This was published on the 18th of Jan. 1870. It called for business to be suspended on the day of his funeral.
 Regarding the second son Hugh Akin mentioned above the following is known: Hugh was the son of James and his 1st wife, Mary J. Porter Akin. He was born in March of 1847. Per the Soldiers and Sailors System, he served with the 48th Regiment of the Tennessee Infantry (Voorhies'). He died in Nashville April 12, 1923.
