Gibson, 76, retired U.S. Postal Service supervisor and resident of Creek Trail,
died Saturday, March 7, 1998, at Maury Regional Hospital. Funeral services will
be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Bro. Wayne Hardison
and Bro. Mike Greene, ministers of North View Church of Christ, officiating.
Burial will be in the Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends
today from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may
be made to Columbia Academy. The Giles County native was the son of the late
Emmitt and Nina Sands Gibson. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in
the European Theatre of Operation and was awarded the Bronze Star for action in
Germany and Belgium. Prior to his employment with the U.S. Postal Service, he
worked at the William Connelly Grocery on West 11th Street. He was a member of
the North View Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Anne Murphy Gibson
of Columbia; a daughter, Mrs. David (Sandra) Hardison of Lexington, Ky.; a son,
Neal H. Gibson of Nashville; three sisters, Mrs. Fred (Christine) Petty, Mrs.
Allene McCord and Mrs. Joe (Bonnie) Hickman, all of Columbia; two brothers,
LeRoy (Virginia) Gibson and Joe (Freda) Gibson, both of Columbia, three
grandsons, Jonathan Hardison, Matthew Hardison and Benjamin Hardison, all of
Lexington, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a
brother, William Gibson. Active pallbearers are Paul Gibson, Keith Flowers,
Jerry Douglas, Hendley Edwards, David Edwards, John David Edwards, Doug Owen,
Doug Kinnard. Honorary pallbearers include M.T. Potts, Carl Sellers, Ray Clark,
Jack Journey, Dr. James Richardson, Dr. C. Houston Jameson, Tommy Love, Jimmy
Bloss and Rufus Haygood.
