footstone initials "W. S."
9502 marker, only very top part visible. Rest buried deep into the ground "In Memory of _ _ _ ". Often this situation is caused by a stone breaking years ago and someone burying it deep into the ground to keep it from getting lost and out of place. Also stones can often slide off into the grave in the upright position since the soil over a grave settles over time and the soil is softer. [WA 15 Aug 2009]

I found all the old footstone set in a row aligning with the headstones as if they were headstones through out this cemetery. While that is good for the cemetery grass maintenance crew it is a night mare for researchers to figure out what footstone went with what headstone. The above listing of the footstone photos was our best answer to that. You can study the shapes, patination & other traits of the footstones and make some application as to what headstone the footstone originally accompanied. Researcher Fred Hawkins when he visited in 1987 mentions several footstones with metal plates depicting initials. This was at one time footstones aligned with the headstone. Those were gone (at least the plates were) when I visited here in 2009. I believe someone realized the confusion they were causing and created more confusion by removing the plates and leaving the footstones out of place.  Oh well, folks and their misguided intentions. Happens all the time.
