COOPER, Martin McClain,
12 Aug. 1861 Tn.- 1 Jan. 1933 Maury Co., Tn.. (mar. (1) Elizabeth Jane
"Dink" Beckum;(b. 13 Jul 1861 - 1 Oct 1903.); married 2nd to Mrs.
Bessie (Elkins) Goodman living in 1967 at Columbia, Tn., with her son Lehman
Goodman. Martin McClain Cooper was named for his Great Uncle Martin McClain. He
was the Uncle of Lavonia McClain (daughter of William T. McClain), this we know
from the letters written back and forth from Martin to his niece. Martin's
father was Thomas Simpson Cooper (the son of Col. Robert Melville and Catherine
Cooper Cooper of Chester Co., South Carolina.) Children of Martin M. and
Elizabeth Jane Beckum Cooper are: Oatie Cooper ( b. 22 Dec. 1884), and Seth
Cooper (b. 11 Oct. 1894.) Mart Cooper died at Sandy Hook, Maury Co., Tn.; joined
the Mt. Joy Church in 1893.)

Mart Cooper 71, died Monday morning at his home at Sandy Hook of pneumonia. He
was a farmer. Mr. Cooper was a member of a prominent family and was the son of
the late Thomas S. and Lavonia McClain Cooper. He was born and spent most of his
life in the Mt. Joy Community. He was a life long member of the Cumberland
Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bessie Goodman Cooper; a son
Seth Cooper of Mt. Pleasant; a stepson, Lehman Goodman of Maury County; a
brother, Knox Cooper of Mt. Pleasant, and the following sisters, Misses Lavonia,
Florence and Cora Cooper and Mrs. Nettie Pollock all of Maury County.(note:
Knox, Lavonia, Florence and Cora Cooper where Mart M.Cooper's half-brother and
sisters.) Funeral services were held at the Mt. Joy Cumberland Presbyterian
church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Albert Holt and
burial was in the McClain Cemetery.)
