GILMER CEMETERY, SOUTHPORT, MAURY COUNTY, TENNESSEE, May 27, 2002

The grave site is on the farm previously owned by Misses Willie and Sammie Gilmer. Field Grave Stones were replaced with a modern granite stone sometime after 1990.

Jeremiah Gilmer was an Elder in the McCain's Cumberland Presbyterian Church and a member of the Tennessee State Legislature.

 
GILMER, Jeremiah, 2 Mar 1810 - 28 Dec 1875, "Commanding General of the Maury County Militia, War between the States". Jeremiah Gilmer's sister was Euphance Gilmer Stockard Coffee, the 2nd wife of Nathan Coffee another prominent citizen of early Maury County.


GILMER, Henrietta A., (Adkisson), 1815 - 4 June 1877. Henrietta's maiden name was Adkisson. She was thought to be Jeremiah's second wife. There is a marriage record for Jeremiah Gilmer to Nancy Patterson May 9, 1832. Nancy died July 16, 1842 according to researcher Joyce Grigsby.
There is a possibility that Jeremiah Gilmer's parents who were Joseph b. abt 1780 & Martha Adeline Forbis Gilmer b. abt 1790 were interred here also. It is known they came to Maury County from North Carolina but no graves have yet turned up with a marker. Others have them posted in the Reeses Church cemetery up the road but offer on evidence to back up their claim.
