A few fieldstones and grave covers at the far south end of cemetery. No
inscriptions found:7613/7614
For the 2nd trip I dug out of the ground many pieces of
tombstone and fitted back together several of the parts that make up complete or
almost complete inscription as seen above. The rest were stacked in an orderly
place away from the lawn mowers and left as depicted in the photos, but the
largest stack did not have any inscription representing the bottoms of the
tombstones and fragments of footstones with or without initials. Use these in
the future to finish out some of the broken tombstones. I see one small piece
that I missed that had a part of an inscribed "O" that should be in the
inscribed 2nd group:2962/different
direction same group:2979/2980
For the 75XX/76XX photo
series - First trip here I collected as many inscribed parts as I could matching
them to a tombstone where I could. Next trip the 29XX photo series was more
productive in completing tombstones from broken parts and separating the
fragments between those without inscriptions and those that had remaining
inscription. If you visit here please do not bother these stones unless you can
match them together better than I did. As in time rain and other events of
nature that naturally separate piles of stones if you are here help me keep
these together as they are, until a repairman with the proper epoxies comes
long, and permanently glues the parts back together.
It is clear Vandals have
visited this cemetery in the past and destroyed most of the oldest monuments. The
worst vandalized section is largely the Record (surname) family monuments. No
one even bothered to go and reassemble the parts back together either until I came along,
but I did not spend enough time either to do that. Reassembling first works better
with a computer anyway to first identify the parts, then apply that to the
cemetery restoration. I first graphically put some of the parts back
together above to remake the inscriptions as visible as possible. Thanks to Tim
& Helen Marsh in the 1960s & especially (my cousin) Ralph Whitsell in the 1950s,
the inscriptions of this cemetery have, we trust, been mostly revealed. Many of
the inscribed parts of these tombstones are lying sometimes even underground
next to the fence in the Record family grave area. I dug out and stacked a few
of them back together. Some are incorrectly lying together with parts that do
not match up. The William T. Record Tomb is lying in three different
places, the top 2 parts 7589L
is next to the fence in the
Record Family area and the center part out in the middle of the cemetery
7611C
and the third two parts
7597L
over on the north side
of the James Record b. 1765 monument. I put the five parts back together in this
graphic:7589Wm.
If you are interested in the Record family you can study the parts of these
vandalized tombstones and may garner additional information.
In the two visits and separate attempts to reassembly all the broken tombstones
in the Record family grave area I largely left both presentations in place above
which will be a bit confusing but leave a better trail of the work done to make
this destroyed graveyard whole again. CWA
