Footstone unidentified & with no inscription. It is not aligning with a
headstone:

*A Large Cedar Tree has grown up (but now dying) in the grave of Jimmy Shadden.
** This is an adult size headstone & footstone but headstone is misplaced
leaving me unsure if the grave space is adult or child.
*** The James H. Shadden stone is leaning against this one but does not belong
here. It needs to dry out as it is fracturing so I left it there.
**** This was probably salvaged from nearby Lynn or Richland Creeks somewhere. A
grain mill built using these parts predates
to about 1890.
Archie Williams, the cattle farmer, and caretaker of this land
took me to this cemetery but it was still hard to find. Thanks Archie for your
help.
Jean Cosby's Comment: 25 Apr 2017:
I have a copy of Elizabeth Witt Whites genealogy. She did not have any info on
Martin Shadden being here as the husband of Alice Shadden.
CWA Comment: 27 Apr 2017:
I am not guaranteeing that Martin Shadden was Alice's husband but a marriage
record existed in Ancestry.com for Ailcey Dodson marrying Martin Shadden in 10
Jul 1807. I
cannot find the 1820 census on this family, but 1830 has Ashley/(Alice) Shadden and the 1840
census another name Alcy. She is known in other censuses as Alice
so deviations for her given name occurred as she progressed thru those records.
So by 1830 Alice was a widow with children if I cut thru the errors and read the census correctly.
I did not find these entries n the
graveyard. Must be in unmarked graves
or fallen stones that sunk into the graves:
McMATH, Ann E., 17 Aug 1843 - 25 Jul 1865, w/o L. S. McMath, d/o Elisha M. &
Olivia Ann Ramsey Shadden
PATTERSON, Simpson A., 03 Nov 1816 - 18 Apr 1883, h/o Amanda M. Shaddon, s/o
_____& _______ Patterson
RAMSEY, Jane H., 23 Jan 1785 - 05 Aug 1860, w/o Robert H. Ramsey, d/o
____________ and ____________
Found a stone for James H. Shadden, but dates were 24 Jan 1847 to 5 Jun 1848. (a
baby). The months seem like same person as 1817 - 1845 but the days and years are different.
Just looks mostly like a misread stone but I am not 100% sure. Censuses are no
help here because actually the baby listed on the stone was between them and the listing is
before the censuses started enumerating names of children in 1850. I will probably assume it was an error and the same
person unless someone can prove the tombstone is wrong. I cannot fix the Findagrave entry without a bunch of ya ya
though. I am sure the error will live on.
Was:

(cannot be son of Martin and Alice. Martin is

Photographed on a damp Monday 24 Apr 2017. Archie Williams provided access using his four wheel drive truck and helped me find and survey this cemetery. The cemetery is about a mile behind his home. He is the caretaker of this land and now operates a cattle farm with his wife. I was pleased to find that the cattle do not generally come this far back into the woods probably due to the rocky hillside land and woodland.
The listing was provided by Jean Cosby which includes the genealogy. Added here 30 Apr 2017. This publication is listed on page 484 of the book Giles County Cemeteries by the Historical Society about 1988. Added here 29 Apr 2017.
