*I have found that a wife's stone without a death date usually means the wife
died after the husband. For some reason it is harder for children to remember
this detail after the stone gets set in the graveyard for he husband. I believe
she is certainly buried here, because there is a footstone initialed as: M.E.K..
**How do we know J.P.W.B. stands for Joseph Powell Was Born? (1)By the records of the Giles Co Cemetery book that say Joseph Powell is buried here and gives his dates. (2) Also all of these stones have WB before the 1st date. ("WB" was used as a common way of abbreviating "Was Born" by this stone carver. This method shows up in other nearby graveyards such as Appleton Cemetery in Lawrence Co. TN. There was a John Owens who is buried in the Owens cemetery nearby but across the Lawrence County Line on Sugar Creek who was known to be an excellent stone carver. However he was born in 1841 (unless it was actually his father) too late to carve some of these stones. Owens used limestone commonly found nearby not of the best grade. My first thoughts about this was maybe they did not know a B from a P.) Later with some clues from the book I figured out that JPWB etc (See above Joseph Powell listing) meant Joseph Powell Was Born Dec 8, 1785 DeCeased Oct 1, 1853. His wife Jane's tombstone was done the same way. There were three of the Kincaid stones carved the same way, but all were for children. All these stones were inscribed from 1848 to 1858 I am sure by the same stone carver.
There were two listings I dropped for a couple J.P. & W.B. Kincaid which I did not find. Their dates matched exactly those of Joseph & Jane Powell - not hardly possible. I concede that records may exist somewhere that show this couple lived in this area and was buried here and someone missed getting their dates correct, but I choose to believe the corruption (of the hard to read hand carved stone abbreviations above) was caused by the Cemetery book writers/copyers misinterpreting the confusing stones above.
Added here 29 Jan 2017 based on a visit on a sunny Tuesday 24 Jan 2017. Originally published on page 449 of the book Giles County, Tennessee Cemeteries by the Historical Society about 1985 with important details omitted. The Findagrave crowd either cannot find the cemetery of choose to ignore its rough condition and add their listings to the Powell Cemetery across the Shannon Creek valley from this site. I may add the menu and mapping and see if they will transfer and add the rest of the listings. Several Listings added from the records of Jean Cosby.
