Jacob Gardner officiated. She was the wife of the late Tom Appleton and the daughter of the late James and Mary Kimbrough Phillips. She is survived by one nephew, Giles Phillips.

Mrs. Janice Marie Banks, 36, of Lynnville, died Tuesday, January 5, 1993, at SMC Lumber Company due to injuries sustained in an accident. Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 7, at Bennett-May Chapel with G. C. Fox officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.  A native of Giles County, Mrs. Banks was the daughter of the late Robert Wright. She was a member of the Methodist church and was a lumber stacker at SMC Lumber Company. James Richard Bass, aged 80 years, retired farmer, died early Friday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Will Hayes, at Minor Hill, after a period of failing health.  Funeral services were held Saturday at the Pleasant Ridge Methodist Church near Minor Hill, with the services conducted by the Rev. Harold Loyd, the Rev. W. H. Seay, Superintendent of the Columbia District, and the Rev. H. A. Davis. Interment followed in the Pleasant Ridge cemetery. A lifelong Methodist, born and reared in this county, Mr. Bass lived an honorable life, rearing a family of worthy children. Mr. Bass is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Hayes and Mrs. W. S. Hammond, of Minor Hill; Mrs. Flora Bonner, Lawrenceburg, Mrs. R. M. Powell, of Westfield, Okla., and Mrs. Frank Herring, Phoenix, Ariz.; and five sons, Rev. W. A. Bass, Blanche, Rev. J. Aunt Jane Bee died at the home of her brother, John Bee at Shores about 1:30 o�clock this morning (Monday, June 20, 1932). She had been in failing health for several years suffering with cancer. She leaves to mourn her going away, one sister and two brothers, Mrs. Hyberna Roberts and John Bee of Shores and J. M. Bee of Bethel. She leaves a number of nieces and nephews. Her father and mother preceded her to the grave several years ago. She will be laid to rest in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery today (Monday).

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Rutherford Bee, 87, widow of Marshall Bee, will be held at 2 o�clock on Thursday afternoon at Pleasant Ridge Methodist Church. Rites will be conducted by Gilbert Shaffer, minister of East Hill Church of Christ and burial will take place in the church cemetery.  Mrs. Bee died Wednesday morning August 24, at the home of her son, Earl Z. Bee, Pulaski, after a six weeks illness. Born November 28, 1872, in Giles County, she was the daughter of the late Jonathan Rutherford and Susan Tomerlin Rutherford, and was a member of the Church of Christ. Her husband, Marshall Bee, died twenty-three years ago. In addition to the son, Earl Bee, Mrs. Bee is survived by three other sons, J. Carson Bee, Pulaski, Will Bee, Bethel, and Raymond Bee, Dallas, Texas; three daughters, Mrs. Elbert Garner, Pulaski, Mrs. Jerome Davenport and Mrs. Oakley Henderson, both of Auburndale, Fla.; 27 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, T. Funeral services for Abraham Campbell, 80, retired farmer who died on Saturday, October 7, at the home of his brother, Rufus Campbell in the Goodsprings section, were held on Sunday afternoon, with burial in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. He had been ill three weeks following a paralytic stroke. He was the son of the late Abraham and Fannie Price Campbell. Mr. Campbell is survived by two brothers, Rufus and Frank Campbell, both of the Goodsprings section; and one sister, Mrs. Bill Johnson.

Funeral services were held at 2 o�clock Monday afternoon at Pleasant Ridge Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Wesley Holden, with the burial in the church cemetery. A native of Giles County, he was born February 17, 1885, the son of the late Mrs. and Mrs. Abraham Campbell.  His wife was the late Dezzie James Campbell. He was a member of the Methodist Church. The only survivors are nieces and nephews. Bennett-May Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

He was an Army veteran and a member of the Pleasant Point Church of the Nazarene. Cordie Elsie Chapman died yesterday. A resident of the Pleasant Ridge community, she a retired employee of Morris Harwell and Son and was a columnist for the Pulaski Citizen for almost 30 years. She was 93 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband Alvie Ewing Chapman and by her parents Joseph Mitchell and Edna Cates Norwood. Visitation will be held today from 5-9 p.m. at Carr and Erwin Funeral Home. Services will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Pleasant Ridge United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church from noon until time of the funeral. Survivors include a son Alvie Chapman of Georgia and two daughters, Rena D. Chapman of Georgia and Marlene Johnson and husband Jerry of Mt. Pleasant Tennessee. She is also survived by a sister Faye Gibson of Goodspring Tennessee. Gary Chapman, 14, of Nashville died Tuesday morning, April 30 in a Nashville hospital of injuries received in a three-car smashup in Nashville Sunday. The youth was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Grady Chapman, Jr. and a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Grady Chapman, Sr. and Mrs. Bernice Watkins, all of Giles County. Young Chapman was one of several persons hurt in the Sunday mishap which occurred at a Murfreesboro Road intersection where numerous other accidents have happened recently. The body is at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Nashville, pending the arrival of a brother from Korea. S. W. Chapman Dies: Well Known Here----Appleton Dispatch

S. W. Chapman died at his home near here January 18.  He was 78 years of age.  He is survived by his widow, three sons, 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His friends were numbered by those who knew him and beautiful floral offerings attested to the esteem in which he was held.  He had been a member of the M. E. Church for 20 years and was a steward of the church at Pleasant Ridge for 15 years.  Rev. Arch Bass of Theda, Tenn., conducted the funeral.

7 Year Old Child Killed By Truck Tuesday Evening�Tragic Accident Occurs On Highway South Of City Last Tuesday�Death Follows In Short While� Victim Was Daughter Of  Mr. and Mrs. T. F. Comer Of This City:

Frances Nell, the seven year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. F. Comer, who reside in the Garner home across Shoal Creek, just south of this city, was killed when struck by a truck about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.  After the accident, the child was taken to the hospital but lived only two hours.  The truck, which belonged to W. O. Williams of Five Points, was driven by W. F. Davis.  It was said that Mr. Comer stated the tragedy was unavoidable.  Services were held Wednesday at Pleasant Ridge, conducted by James D. Vaughan.  Freemon and Company were in charge of funeral arrangements.  Mr. and Mrs. Comer moved here from Good Springs about six months ago.

On Thursday morning December 26 the death angels called Dudley Garner, son of Mrs. George A. Garner. Dudley was a member of the Methodist Church, a highly respected young man of 20 years. It is sad for such a young man to be taken from his mother and sisters and brothers. He was the oldest one left with his mother, his father died only eighteen days before. Burial service was conducted by Rev. Putman. His remains were laid to rest at Pleasant Ridge burial ground.

Walter May Glover, 78, retired farmer of the Eighteenth Civil District, died on Tuesday, February 6, at his home in the Scotts Hill community. Funeral services were held at 2 o�clock Wednesday afternoon at Pleasant Ridge Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Eris Journey, and burial took place in the church cemetery. Born October 10, 1872 in Giles County, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tom Glover. He was a member of the Methodist Church.  Mrs. Sallie Hughes Glover was his first wife, Mrs. Hattie Nave Glover the second wife, survives. By the first marriage, Mr. Glover is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Beulah Nave, Scotts Hill, and Mrs. Lizzie Smith and Mrs. Lura Hughes, both of Killen, Ala.; and five sons, Jim Glover, Vollie Glover, Arthur Glover, Earl Glover and Dewey Glover, all of Killen, Ala. By the second marriage, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Allen Bassham, Lawrenceburg; and two sons, Gladys Glover and Howard Glover, both of Scotts Hill. Family legend has it they were living in �the bend of the river� and when they contracted �the fever� and one of   them died there and the other one made it back to Giles County. I do not know where either one is  buried but there is a  Memorial Marker in Pleasant Ridge Methodist Church Cemetery. Their only child  was Oscar Willis Glover who was raised by his grandparents after his parents died.

A native of Maury County, Mr. Henson was the son of the late Marvin Eugene Henson, Sr. He was a member of the Church of Christ and was a chemical supervisor at Stoffer Chemical Company. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Watkins Henson of Campbellsville; one son, Mike Henson of Pulaski; five daughters, Angela Walls of Campbellsville, Cindy Baxter of Prospect, Allyson Henson of Sacremento, Calif., Rose Mary Bell of Pulaski, Emily Floyd of Oil City, Penn.; his mother, Mary Frances Trice Lindsey of Mt. Thursday morning at 10 o�clock the death angel came to the home of Mrs. Charlie Moore and gathered the soul of her little sweet daughter Oderbelle, upon its snowy wings and wafted it back to the blessed Saviour who gave it. �Obbie� as she was known to everyone was twelve years eight months and a few days old. Just in the bloom of her youth but God saw best to call her home so she just paid the debt that we all owe.  Some say she had TB and others say it was pneumonia and her tonsils. So we were not certain what it was. She was a sweet and loving girl and to know her was to love her. All her schoolmates loved her. She was always so kind and good at school. After funeral services by Rev. E. E. Eddings she was laid to rest in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. Her girl schoolmates were pall bearers. Weep not dear loved ones for sweet �Obbie� is not dead, but only asleep in the arms of the dear Saviour. She cannot come back to us but we can go to meet her if only we believe and obey God�s will.

Obituary:

Death is sad at all times, but when our loved ones are taken away from us almost without warning, it seems very sad indeed.  Uncle George Norwood is dead!  This was the sad news that went ringing over our land and country on last Monday, September 3, and it was oh such a shock to his dear old brothers and sisters and children.  Altho not feeling as well as usual, uncle George had attended a graveyard working at Pleasant Ridge on Saturday and on Sunday was walking about the place singing as usual.  Monday he complained of feeling bad and lay down across the bed, his granddaughter, Miss Dezzie Rutherford, asked him if he wanted a drink of water, and he replied, "No Dezzie.  I just want to rest, let me rest awhile", and with those words, he was gone to rest forever more.  Uncle George was born Dec. 27, 1835, being at his death, 87 years, 8 months and 7 days old, although a long time to stay in this old world of sin and sorrow, he was very active and no one had more friends than Uncle George.  He was another one of our good old Civil War Veterans and was a member of the Masonic Lodge and had been a member of the Methodist church for over 40 years.  He leaves behind to mourn his going away, his last wife, three brothers and two sisters, J. A. Norwood of Petersburg, Tenn., E. T. of Shannon Creek and J. H. who now makes his home on Clear Creek, {Rest of obituary was missing.}  The two sisters were, Mrs. Mary Tabitha Coffman of Ala., and Mrs. Elizabeth Thompson of Minor Hill.  His children, I know that were still living were, Cornelia M. Again the Death Angel has visited this community and claimed as its victim, Mrs. Harriet Norwood, or as she is better known here as �Aunt Harriet.�  She had been in declining health for several years, so on May 23, God saw fit to call her from this old world of sorrow to the beyond.  Aunt Harriet has lived in this county many years and was a good woman.  She was a member of the Methodist church and will be greatly missed by all who know her.  She leaves a husband and several children, all of whom are married but one boy.  The family has the sympathy of the writer.  She was laid to rest in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, with funeral services conducted by Rev. Funeral services for Joseph Mitchell Norwood, 85, retired farmer of the Shores section, were held at 2 o�clock Wednesday afternoon at Pleasant Ridge Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. W. C. Moorehead of Lynchburg, former pastor, and the Rev. Elmer Howell, Baptist minister. Burial took place in the church cemetery. Mr. Norwood died at 5 o�clock Monday afternoon, April 15, at Fairhaven Nursing Home after a long illness. Born February 21, 1878 in Giles County, he was the son of the late George and Harriet Glover Norwood. His wife, Mrs. Edna Cates Norwood, died August 16, 1957. He was a member of the United Methodist Church. Mr. Norwood is survived by three sons, Joe Norwood, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Miller E. Norwood, U. S. Army, stationed in Germany, and Lynn Norwood, Goodspring; three daughters, Mrs. A. E. Chapman and Mrs. Cebron Nave, Goodspring, and Mrs. Paul Gibson, Alcoa; twenty grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Bennett-May Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Oakley Norwood, 57 of Plantation, Fla., died Sunday, July 2 in Plantation. His widow is Margie LaMaster Norwood. Services will be held Thursday, July 6, 2:00 p. m. at Pleasant Ridge Methodist Church with burial in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.  A native of Giles County, he was the son of the late Mitchell and Edna Cates Norwood. He was Direct Oil manager for 25 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Jerry Norwood, Long Island, N. Funeral services for Kenyon W. Norwood, 36, World War II veteran and former Giles County teacher, were held at 2:00 p. m. Monday at Pleasant Ridge Methodist Church by the Rev. W. C. Moorehead and the Rev. Robert Davis. Burial was in the church cemetery, with Bennett-May Funeral Directors in charge. Mr. Norwood, who had been residing in Euclid, Ohio, for the past three years, was found dead in his car near Euclid Thursday afternoon. His death resulted from a self-inflicted bullet wound, according to the report given to Sheriff P. M. Butler by Ohio officers. The body was returned to Pulaski Sunday and remained at Bennett-May Funeral Home until the funeral on Monday afternoon.  The son of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Norwood of the Pleasant Ridge community, Mr. Norwood was a graduate of Martin College and Middle Tennessee State College, Murfreesboro. He had been a member of the faculty at Beech Hill High School and Campbellsville High School before moving to Ohio where he had been connected with a General Electric plant for three years. In addition to his parents, other survivors are three brothers, Joe Norwood of Asheville, N. C., Miller Norwoo, Tokyo, Japan, and Lynn Norwood of Maryville; three sisters, Mrs. Paul Gibson, Maryville, Mrs. A. E. Chapman, and Mrs. Cebrun Nave of the Goodspring community.

Giles County High School students observed a minute of silence this morning (Thursday)in memory of their classmate, freshman Joshua Everett (Josh) Pope, who died yesterday after a 7 p. m. ATV accident. The 15-year-old was the son of Tommy and Linda Garner Pope of Route 1, Goodspring. Services will be held at 2 p. m. Friday at the Carr and Erwin Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, with Steve Nave officiating. Mr. Pope was dead at the scene of the accident on Carr Road, 10 miles south of Pulaski near Pleasant Ridge. Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Kevin Horan�s report stated that Mr. Pope had been driving a 1993 Honda ATV north in a snake-like motion when he ran off the edge of the road, struck a small log and flipped from the four-wheeler. The report stated the boy was wearing a helmet. Mr. Pope played baseball in the Babe Ruth League for Gabriel Ride Control Division.  Survivors other than his parents include a brother, Tommy Pope, Jr. of Goodspring; a sister, Jennifer Hinton of Goodspring; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Garner of Pulaski and Mrs. Lessie Pope of Elkton and a great grandmother, Mrs. Junie Carr of Goodspring.

Funeral services for Robert S. Shelton, 77, farmer of the Fourth Civil District, were held at 2 o�clock Friday afternoon at Pleasant Ridge Methodist Church. The Rev. Mack Pinkelton, Baptist minister, officiated and burial took place in the church cemetery. Mr. Shelton died Wednesday at Giles County Hospital, following a paralytic stroke suffered at his home. Mr. Shelton lived alone. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. T. C. Appleton, Minor Hill; three sons, Logan Shelton, Akron, Ohio, Ivan Shelton, Detroit, Mich., and Paul Shelton, Louisville, Ky.; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Lillie Helmick, Akron, Ohio; and one brother, Kenneth L. Roma Bert Smith died today at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. A resident of Goodsprings, he was 73 years old. Visitation will be held tomorrow from 5-9 p.m. at Carr and Erwin Funeral home. Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Carr & Erwin Funeral Home with Dr. Doug Plumblee officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Survivors include his wife Linda Smith of Goodsprings, son Jeff Smith and wife Becky of Athens Alabama and two daughters, Robin Smith Hood and husband Preston of Goodsprings and Patsy Stanford and husband Randy of Pulaski. He is survived by a sister Norene Rolin of Prospect. Eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert Ira and Cora Dennison Smith and by a son Ronnie Bert Smith, daughter Sheila Mae Salters and a sister Arlene Hodges. A 52-year-old retired Maremont-Gabriel employee was killed in a motorcycle accident on Agnew Road Friday night.  Albert Thornton, Route 1, Johnson Branch Road, Pulaski, was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle and struck a culvert. He was thrown from the vehicle and the motorcycle apparently fell on him. The accident occurred five miles west of Pulaski at about 7 p. m. Friday. Mr. Thornton was a Giles County native and the son of Homer Thornton and the late Alma Barnett Thornton. He was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church. Mr. Thornton was injured in a mishap on a motorcycle in early 1987. Services were at 11 a.m. Monday at Bennett-May Chapel with the Rev. Mack Pinkelton, the Rev. Dwight Mercer and the Rev. Nolan Brunson officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. Survivors, in addition to his father, include one son, Don Thornton of Cornersville; five brothers, Homer, R. C., Buford, and Jerry Thornton, all of Pulaski, and Leland Thornton of Sherman, Texas; one grandchild. Mr. Thornton was the third traffic fatality in Giles County this year.

SHERMAN - Leland Douglas Thornton, 67, of Sherman passed away at WNJ Medical Center on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009. Services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, at Dannel Funeral Home with Bill Mayes of Woods Street Church of Christ officiating.  Leland was a long-time resident of Sherman who moved here from Tennessee in 1980. He was born to Homer and Alma Barnett Thornton on Feb. 16, 1942 in Tennessee. He married Charlotte LaCroix on June 7 1983, in Louisiana. A self-employed real estate carpenter, as a hobby he loved to sing and play the guitar. He also enjoyed building and repairing clocks as well as working on lawn mowers. He was a member of Woods Street Church of Christ. Leland was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Charlotte; three sons, Vernon L. Copeland of Cartwright, Okla., John L. On Thursday morning, March 4th , Will Alex Thornton quietly passed away to the great beyond. He had been in failing health for the past few years, but had been worse only a few days. Age 68 years, 6 months, and a few days. Burial at Pleasant Ridge March 5th, funeral services conducted by Rev. Meyer of Minor Hill. Pall bearers were Walter Campbell, Joe Tom Kennedy, Ed Hannah, Shirley White, Robert Davenport and Joe Hickman. At the time of his death, he was making his home with his son, Homer Thornton, of Chicken Creek, by whom he is survived, together with another son, Forrest Thornton and a daughter, Mrs. Leon McNeese. Also several stepchildren, and grandchildren, one brother and one sister, and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Thornton was always a hard worker, a devoted father and a good neighbor, was kind hearted and honest and was always ready to do what he could to help a fellowman.

Mr. Elmer Bernice Watkins, 76, of Goodspring died Feb. 14, 2007, at Maury Regional Hospital in Columbia. He was born Jan. 25, 1931, in Elkmont, Ala., and was the son of the late Burnice Lee and Myrtle May Willis Watkins. He served in the U.S. Army and was retired from Murray Manufacturing. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Guy Watkins and Duncan Watkins. And since his death, lived with other members of the family. Her cousin, W. H. Williamson, who formerly lived here, came up from his home in South Alabama, for the funeral.

Mr. James Audie Wray, 77, of Pulaski, died Friday, June 25, 1993, at Pulaski Health Care Center. Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 27, at Carr and Erwin Chapel with Neal Price officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.  A native of Giles County, Mr. Wray is the son of the late David and Annie Rogers Wray. He was retired from Maremont Gabriel Corporation. Survivors include his wife, Willie Mae Wray, Pulaski; two daughters, Norma Jean Lumpkins and Linday Wray, both of Pulaski; two step-daughters, Ann Couch, Indiana, Elizabeth Copeland, Illinois; three step-sons, Bill Garner, Thomas Garner, and J. D. Garner, all of Indiana; one brother, Otto Wray, Columbia, Tenn.; one sister, Mary Dean Rolin, Columbia, Tenn.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Willie Mae B. Garner Wray, 93, died Feb. 9, 2002, at Greencroft Nursing Care in Goshen, Ind. She was born Feb. 9, 1909, in Giles County and was the daughter of the late John H. and Kathern M. Glover Bee. She was married to the late John S. Garner and the late Audie Wray. She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Methodist Church. Funeral services will to have been held today (Feb. 14) at Carr and Erwin Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.  Survivors include Elizabeth Myers of Magnola, Ill.; Thomas L. Gardner of Elkhart, Ind.; J. D. Garner of New Paris, Ind.; Norma J. Lumpkim of Pulaski; Linda Wray of Pulaski; 28 grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

James Robert Wright, Sr., age 78, died Sunday, July 26, at Hillside Hospital. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 29 at Bennett-May Chapel with burial in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. He was the son of the late Boyd David and Cora Green Wright. He is survived by his wife, Luthene Norwood Wright. Other survivors include, six daughters, Alene Howell and Margaret Barnett, both of Spring Hill, TN, Linda McElrath and Janice Banks, both of Pulaski, Cathey Woodard and Faye Darnel, both of Lynnville; one son, James Robert Jr., Aubondale, Fla.; 2 sisters, Mrs. Clara Collins and Mrs. Lorene King, both of Lewisburg; and 3 brothers, Joe, Gerald and Carter, all of Pulaski.

She was born June, 6, 1928, in Pulaski and was the daughter of the late Lee Norwood and Cora Beatrice Shelton Norwood Johnson. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, April 3, at Carr and Erwin Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. Survivors include her three daughters, Linda McElrath Enciso and Kathy Carol Woodard, both of Elkton, and Cora Faye Darnell of Pulaski; brother Roy Norwood of Ardmore; two half-brothers, Frank Johnson and David Johnson, both of Pulaski; two half-sisters, Bertha Hyatt and Bernice Bishop, both of Pulaski; step-daughter Margaret Barnett of Spring Hill; step-son James Robert Wright Jr. of Florida; 18 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
