Folks these old Turtle Back Vaults with the tombstones concreted in shows us a good lesson as to the reason why concrete should not be associated with old tombstone repair at least above ground. One can see several cases of the tombstones failing in this cemetery after they were plastered with concrete into the Turtle Back Vaults to form one unit. The difference in porous capacity of concrete versus these old tombstones causes varying water retention allowing freezing and thawing to differently affect the tombstone in contact with the concrete causing breakage of the softer lime tombstone. Seems the Vaults being also concreted to keep the water from seeping into them have fared better then the tombstones/footstones.
Record of Cemetery improvements made 25 Aug 2015: (1) Cleared the vines and small trees growing among the Turtle Back Vaults (2) Attempted to use the weed whacker to clear some of the high grass at the base of the vaults, made some improvements but weed eater failed. (3) Dug out the Silas McClellan Monument (in good shape) but needs to be out of the wet ground. Moved it over to below the John F. McClellan monument on the slab where Silas' wife Jane's monument also lies. They both have footstones so would be easy to reset them lower into the ground and they would stand tall, both south of the Peggy McClelland Monument. (4) Attempted to repair the William Frederick Edwards Monument but it's broken top was already in a crumbling state. May need to rebuild it with an artificial back side (8p Sand, 4p Hydrated Lime & 2p mortar mix-type N. Then add water to form a malleable clump) later, along with filling the cracks on the sides & back with the same mix. Front side has lost some inscription but is now stabilized and should be left alone.
