The following excerpt was taken from the New Prospect Community History, written in 1953;  "The Hughes Cemetery is the oldest one still in use in the community. It is located on the present Dr. F.C. Gaines farm on the Giles Co. line, which was originally the Hughes settlement. The Hughes' came here long before the Civil War and were the greatgrandparents of the Hardiman's and others. This burial ground was perhaps the most widelyused of the older cemeteries. Several families which once buried there have used the Shaw and other cemeteries in later years. However, it is still used by some of our families. Persons who have moved to other sections are brought back for burial. Some of the main families are the Kilpatrick's, Honey's, Durhams, Moore's Fisher's, Schindler's and Hardiman's. The oldest tombstone is J.F. Kilpatrick in 1879, however only the front part of the cemetery is cleaned once a year and has tombstones.
Here, also, will be found rows of graves marked only with fieldstones and shrubs. The shrubs are of the slowgrowing type and are now about 10 or 12 feet high with trunks 4 or 5 inches in diameter and dying in the top. They appear to be at least 100 years old. There are cedars of great age also. Mrs. R. V. Shaw (Hattie Moore) states that when her grandmother, Rachel Moore, was buried in 1837, that this was an oldestablished graveyard then.  About half the cemetery is kept clean, the remainder is overgrown with brush and trees. There must be Hughes' buried there but no markers were found." (except for what was recently set.) Printed in the Lawrence County Cemetery book.
