Hurtle Gilbert Jones, 79, retired farmer and former Giles County Tax Assessor,
died Friday, Aug. 4, in Veterans Administration Hospital at Murfreesboro.Funeral
services were held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Cool Springs Church of
Christ with Bernard Burgess, Church of Christ minister officiating. Burial was
in Cool Springs Cemetery. Bennett-May Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.A
veteran of World War I, Mr. Jones was a native of Giles County and served as Tax
Assessor from 1932 to 1940. He was born July 17, 1888, the son of the late Whitt
and Mattie Drake Jones.He was married to the late Orbrie Lee Phillips who died
June 29, 1966.Survivors include a son, Hurtle G. Jones, Jr., of Birmingham,
Ala.; three daughters, Mrs. Morris Maultsby of Pulaski, Mrs. Bruce Matthews and
Mrs. Dewese Whaley, both of Nashville; one brother, Drake Jones of Pulaski; nine
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
