** My (Carolyn) aunt in her records shows Bennetta Ables Wilhoite as being buried in Salem Baptist Church cemetery. For W. R. Oldham (you have at Boonshill has a stone here) on his Death cert it also says Salem Church Cemetery. There are+ 5 listing on Findagrave.com for Salem, one is Bennetta (that I entered). Dora Bridges Hamlin also has her death cert saying Salem Cemetery. Her husband though shows on your listing at Boonshill. John William Gatlins' Parents are also said to be buried at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery. The other two are Olin W & Vertie Palmer Sims both died respectively 1958 & 1993. Now those two does not seem to lie in an abandoned cemetery or one that is destroyed. The old Baptist Church was said to sit on the top of the rise after turning left on Boonshill School Rd, away from Delina Road. That church isn't there any more, but there were burials behind it on the hillside facing 64 highway. There is an area there close by that was once known as Salem. So is Boonshill Cemetery the old Salem Baptist Church? I am confused? Did they possibly have to move the graves from the hillside when the church disappeared. The graves were still there in 1961.

Subject: Boonshill Cemetery

I just came across your listing of the Boonshill Cemetery. In the early 90s I too compiled a list of this cemetery with the help of Florence Clark Erwin and Marian McAfee. The County Cemetery Book was incomplete with several graves not listed. Some of the concrete markers were beginning to disintegrate at the time and are now gone.

The Boonshill Cumberland Presbyterian Church building was once known as the "New Salem Cumberland Presbyterian Church" taking its name from the original building which was located about 3/4 mile due west of the present sight. That congregation was known as ether "Salem Cumberland Presbyterian Church" or "Old Salem Cumberland Presbyterian Church". The group formed the "Old Salem Church in 1847. They were there until they built the new building (its present location) in 1892 and it was listed as "New Salem Cumberland Presbyterian Church" until the late 40s or very early 50s when it took on the community name "Boonshill Cumberland Presbyterian Church".

There is a cemetery located at the old site which would be referred to as either "Old Salem Cemetery" or "Salem Cemetery". A few of the graves were moved after the new building was built thus the dates of death precedes the construction date of the current building, built in 1892.

There are graves at the old location but most are unmarked or simply marked with field stones. There is one exception but I do not remember the family name or that marker. I do have it recorded but not with me.

John Fitzsimmons, [grandson of Stephen Jesse McAfee and son of Frances McAfee Fitzsimmons and Roy G. Fitzsimmons, both buried in the cemetery]

This cemetery is also presented in the book Lincoln County Tennessee Cemeteries  by Tim & Helen Marsh on page 36-40 and on findagrave with 141 listings. There are 337 above which still may miss a few burials dated between 1988 & today.
