COOPER CEMETERY,  CRANFORD HOLLOW RD, MAURY COUNTY TENNESSEE

This is a photo of James Larry Fuller, a descendent, standing behind the stone of Elizabeth Cooper, wife of Jonathan Cooper.

COOPER, Elizabeth G., "consort of Jonathan Cooper, who departed this life Feb the 14th 1858. Aged 63 years, 11 months and 14 days.

H I S T O R Y  O F   T H I S   C O O P E R  F A M I L Y

Jonathan Cooper was born in Chester Co., South Carolina and was the son of Capt. Robert Cooper & Jane Hamilton Cooper. He married Elizabeth Galdsby Duffe who was born 28 Feb 1794 in Tn. and died 14 Feb 1858, in Maury Co., Tn. They married 9 Sept 1909. He was 25 and she was barely 15 years of age.

Jonathan Cooper was 13 yrs. old when his father Capt. Robert Cooper died, he came to Davidson Co., Tn., with his widowed mother Jane Hamilton Cooper and her other children, shortly thereafter they moved to Williamson Co., where he and his youngest brother Matthew Delamere began teaching school.

He purchased 200 acres of land from James C. Riley on the north side of the Duck River on Bear Creek for $2,000.00. This land was in Maury Co. about 5 miles from Columbia and one-fourth mile off Bear Creek Pike on the Cranford Hollow Road (2008 name). The house was purchased by Frank Derryberry who added to the front and back of the house, the the main part is the original two story log house with a chimney at each end. Five of the original maple trees are said to still remain on the property. Jonathan, his wife and six children are buried in the family plot at the rear of the old house near a grove.

Jonathan and Elizabeth had 14 children: William Hamilton, Amanda Melvina, Evalina Belmont, Sarah Ellen, Robert Henderson, Elizabeth Jane, Hester Stewart, John Hall, Matthew Delamere, David Youngman, James Oscar, Mary A., Cornelia (buried at McClain Cemetery, Lewis Co.) and Agnes Cooper.

Jonathan Cooper is the brother of my (Mary Bob McClain) ancestor grandfather Col. Robert Melville Cooper, who is buried at McClain Cemetery in Lewis Co., Tn.
