This photo shows an unbelievable testimonial to humanity. How can we call our selves a civilized people and allow this kind of carnage to our historic graveyards. Everyone of those stones belonged, at one time, as a part of a beautiful monument and could even today be largely restored. 6379

This publication of the Old New Garden Cemetery is based on the photography of C. Wayne Austin 27 Aug 2009. This was after the clearing of the cemetery by the Limestone County Historical Society.  Comparisons to the recent inscriptions found were made to Linda Smith's book mentioned below.  We had to rely partly on Linda's transcription due to some of these stones being further destroyed since 1990, but if we disagreed we used the transcription found here. I did not track which ones were different, but it was obvious Linda & Sheryl did a fine job. Various photography sessions were made to photograph this old cemetery.

This is one of the oldest cemeteries in Limestone County. Many of the oldest box tombs. and stones have been destroyed by time and the lack of care and cars running into the cemetery from failure to yield. The older parts was cleared and was easily accessible. The oldest stone is that of Mrs. Barbara Fisher who died in 1831. There are older graves, but the stones are now gone. Copied originally Nov. 1, 1990 by Sheryl and Linda Smith, in the book Tombstone inscriptions of Limestone County Alabama. Sources here are mostly the research by C. Wayne Austin aided by the clearing done on this cemetery by the Limestone County Historical Society. Linda Nelson has a treatise on this published in the Limestone County Historical Society under New Garden Cemetery.
