B. C. might be Clabes son Berry that lived in Richland. People were moving to
Bell Mina/Mooresville in late 1920 thorough 1930, for employment, Wheeler
Dam was being built and there was work on the Wheeler (lake) reservoir.

Grave Sinks are numerous & abound all about the 4+ acre site. This was
once a substantial landing site. Pioneer settlers floated down the Tennessee
River in the early 1800s to settle here. Mooresville Alabama is considered the
oldest town in Alabama history. Early in history this was a territory of
Mississippi. In those days folks passed away and there was
no formal headstones set over their graves. This informality of
burial without markers, though lessened continued, and is occasionally present today.

As many as 75 sunken graves with no marker present all around the cemetery-
photo does not pick up on them: 8294
Vandals (or just dumb treasure hunters) have gotten into the Nelson Box
tombs and destroyed them, by dismantling the tombs and breaking the
slab tops, sides & ends into small pieces. Of course they found nothing, but
spiders, wasps and an occasional snake. They also dug into the graves. A deep hole was found in front
of the Military Monument of Fredrick B. Nelson Jr. and the soil was piled up
high on top of part of the top of his broken tomb. Among the ruins I found the
scavenger's
old flashlight while raking up the leaves indicating this crime was committed
during the night. The flashlight was about a 1960s model.
Perhaps these broken tombstone parts could be reassembled and glued back together, assuming all the parts are
still there, but I was unable to find all the parts. 8354/8364
Note: All five of the Nelson Box tombs were inscribed by J. White of Memphis
Tennessee, probably using stone cut from the Missouri quarries & floated
downstream where the quarried stone was then finished and inscribed there in Memphis.
This stone is field Spur ( I think) and much softer than the granite used today.

LOCATION: SW quarter of NW quarter, Sect. 8, T5S, R3W on Wheeler Refuge behind
the community of Mooresville. This is an extremely large cemetery
with graves scattered over the entire area. Almost none are marked. What stones remain are difficult to find.
Portions of the information on this cemetery came from the TVA burial removal
records that was donated by Mr. James Douthat of Mountain Press who also
allowed us to use the information from his book "Wheeler Reservoir Cemeteries".
A 1915 TVA survey map showed this cemetery contained about 2,500
graves. presented Mar. 12, 1989 by Linda & Wayne Smith of Tombstone Records
of Limestone County Alabama.
This presentation was published by C. Wayne Austin after discussions with
Michele Jackson who has an ancestral interest in this cemetery. The work also
resulted from a couple of visits early in the 2012 year and included efforts to
dig up and reassemble the tops of the Nelson Box tombs. Other probing
efforts were made to locate the lost tombstones over this large and largely lost
graveyard but only a couple of those turned up from that and those are included
above. Photographs were made of all stones before the incomplete or partial
restoration of the Nelson area but the reassembled photos are also included
above.
