Unmarked graves - Grave sinks and fieldstones: 5331/5332

** I am not aware if this is a mixed heritage cemetery, but most mixed heritage cemeteries evolved by being first a burial ground prior to 1865.  The slave owners & families were buried there and they allowed their slaves to share in the same cemetery grounds. After the slave owners family moved away and/or died out the descendents of the slaves continued to use the same premises, though it was outside the main premises of the owners area. This separation is usually not complete in that all races used the outside of the fenced area even after the family designation ceased to exist. That might be because some unmarked graves were for white friends and relatives of the original family when the premises was not heavily populated with graves. So we cannot conclude that the graves outside the fence are only African American. The several grave clumps over this more than two acres graveyard were started as family oriented grave areas and grew, but not usually maintaining the original family designation. This analysis may be wrong, but the conclusions are based on very distinct clumping of graves over a large area. This indicates a lack of organization of the cemetery in general, usually related to lack of a formal survey of the premises and layout of the graves, not uncommon in rural areas in olden times, but this seems to have been continued as a tradition by African Americans in later times.
I believe this cemetery is named after Maclin Cross who seems to be the progenitor of the Cross family here and later the Coffey family came to this community from Bedford County Tennessee and married into the Cross family.

This cemetery was visited on a cloudy/rainy 1 Feb 2016. I have no historical publication to compare this listing with. It is also present on Findagrave.com
